The 4Cs of Lab-Grown Diamonds Explained Simply

Updated: May 7

Walk into any diamond conversation — with a jeweller, a friend, or a Google search — and within minutes you'll hear the phrase "the 4Cs." Cut. Colour, Clarity. Carat. These four criteria are the universal language of diamonds. They apply equally to mined diamonds and lab-grown diamonds, and understanding them is the single most useful thing you can do before buying a stone.

1. Cut — The Most Important C

If you only remember one thing from this article, make it this: cut is the most important of the 4Cs. Cut does not refer to the shape of the diamond. Cut refers to the proportions, symmetry, and polish of the stone — how well the diamond has been crafted to interact with light.

Cut Grade

Grade

What it means

Excellent

Maximum light performance. The finest cut.

Very Good

Near-maximum light performance. Excellent value.

Good

Good balance of cut quality and cost.

Poor

Significant light leakage. Avoid.

Always aim for Excellent or Very Good cut. Because lab-grown diamonds are more affordably priced, you can often achieve a top-cut stone within the same budget.

2. Colour — Less Is More

Diamonds come in a range of colours. When it comes to the standard white diamond, less colour means more value. The grading scale runs from D (completely colourless) to Z (noticeably yellow or brown).

3. Clarity — Understanding Imperfections

Clarity refers to the presence of internal inclusions and surface blemishes. Most are microscopic and have no impact on the diamond's appearance to the naked eye.

4. Carat — Weight, Not Size

Carat is the most talked-about C, and the most misunderstood.

Carat is a unit of weight, not size. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look quite different in diameter depending on their cut — a shallow-cut stone will appear larger face-up but will sacrifice brilliance; a well-cut stone will look slightly smaller but will out-sparkle it dramatically.

Carat Weight vs Approximate Diameter (Round Brilliant)

Carat weight

Approximate diameter

0.75ct

~5.9mm

1.00ct

~6.5mm

1.50ct

~7.4mm

2.00ct

~8.2mm

These are approximate figures for a well-cut round brilliant. Fancy shapes (oval, pear, marquise) often appear larger face-up at the same carat weight because their elongated form covers more surface area.

How the 4Cs Work Together

No single C exists in isolation. A diamond's overall beauty and value is determined by the interplay between all four.

Here's a practical example. Suppose your budget is ₹1,50,000. With a mined diamond, you might achieve:

  • 0.70ct | G colour | SI1 clarity | Very Good cut

With a lab-grown diamond of equivalent quality from Nishal Gems, the same budget could get you:

  • 1.50ct | G colour | VS1 clarity | Excellent cut

Same budget. More than twice the size. Better clarity. Superior cut.

This is the real-world impact of understanding the 4Cs — and choosing lab-grown.

Our expertise in the 4Cs is not theoretical — it comes from decades of cutting, grading, and trading diamonds at scale in Surat, India's diamond capital. When you source a lab-grown diamond from us, you are getting consistent quality backed by genuine industry knowledge.

Whether you are looking for a single stone for an engagement ring or sourcing inventory as a jeweller, we can help you navigate the 4Cs to find exactly what you need.

The Bottom Line

The 4Cs — Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat — are the foundation of every diamond purchase. Learn them, and you'll never be talked into the wrong stone.

For lab-grown diamonds, the 4Cs work exactly the same way as for mined stones. The difference is that with lab-grown, your budget goes significantly further across all four criteria. More carat. Better cut. Higher colour. Cleaner clarity.

That is the lab-grown diamond advantage — and it starts with understanding the four numbers behind every great stone.
